Cold plunge pools, sized for serious daily use.

A cold plunge pool sits at the upper end of the cold-immersion category. Internal dimensions typically run 200 cm long, 100 cm wide and 110–130 cm deep — large enough to accommodate a fully horizontal adult with arms extended at the sides. Most pools hold 800 to 1,200 litres, double or triple the volume of a domestic ice bath, which buys you genuine thermal mass and a stable session temperature even with two adults using the pool back to back.

The chiller is the key component. A 1/2 hp dedicated chiller is the right specification for a 1,000-litre pool used daily, with sanitation handled by an inline UV-C lamp and a 25-micron mechanical cartridge filter. Better units include ozone generation as a secondary sanitation layer; both technologies keep water clear for six to ten weeks of daily use. The chiller exhausts warm air during operation; place it in a ventilated alcove or shed adjacent to the pool, never in a sealed enclosure.

Construction varies. Stainless steel pool inserts inside cedar or thermo-aspen outer cladding give the most premium aesthetic and the longest service life. Polyurethane or fibreglass shells are durable, easier to clean, and less expensive — the trade-off is appearance rather than performance. The pool will last fifteen to twenty years with normal maintenance, comfortably longer than the chiller (which typically lasts ten to twelve before a major service is required).

FAQ · Cold Plunge Pools

Asked & answered.

The questions we get most about cold plunge pools. Anything missing, the phone is the quickest way through.

How much space does a cold plunge pool need?

Allow the pool's footprint plus 60 cm clearance on the entry side and 30 cm on the chiller side. A typical 200 × 100 cm pool needs a 280 × 160 cm clear area. The chiller itself sits within 1 m of the pool and can be placed against a wall.

What does it cost to run year-round?

For a 1,000-litre insulated pool held at 6°C in a UK garden, expect 1,500–2,500 kWh per year — roughly £450 to £750 at average UK tariffs in 2026. An insulated cover and side wraps reduce the figure significantly. Winter operation is cheaper than summer because ambient air is doing most of the cooling.

Can I use it for swimming exercise?

Cold plunge pools are sized for immersion, not swimming. The pool is too short for proper stroke length and too cold for sustained activity. Households who want a swim option should look at counter-current swim spas, which are a different category of product.

How often does the water need changing?

With chiller, UV-C and a clean filter cartridge, every six to ten weeks of daily use. The water in the pool stays cold and is treated continuously, so the bacterial load is far lower than a typical hot tub at any given moment. Visual clarity is the usual prompt for a refresh; a slight haze appears before any actual sanitation issue.

Can two people use it at the same time?

The longer pool format accommodates two adults sitting upright at opposite ends, or one adult lying down with another seated. The thermal mass means the temperature stays close to set point even with two people using simultaneously. Most owners use the pool solo because cold-water immersion is a private practice, but the option is there.
